This is brilliant. You're familiar with those pin array sculptures, you know, the box full of hundreds of pins you can push in from the back side and it creates the contour? This is done on the same principal, and the results are stunning. Siercon and Coral, you never fail to amaze.
I really can't get enough of these Brick Sketches by Chris McVeigh. And with Christmas only three days away I'm not sure how Santa had time to pose for this (I guess being in Canada helps for proximity to the north pole?) but I'm glad he did.
This is a seriously eye-grabbing MOC. The tag team tournament at BrickPirate.net is challenging builders to build their avatars in graffiti mode. I love the use of the lime green against the black, it's contrasty and dynamic.
Artists are a peculiar breed. Sometimes doing odd things for the sake of doing them, or for...art. They engage in strange behavior in front of large numbers of people, for whatever reason. Like the guy that built the MOCs of these two poor guys trying to enjoy a meal, sheesh.
I often find myself conflicted on graffiti. One the one hand I can't condone defacing property or vandalism, but I've also seen some incredible work by street artists. Lucky for me I can get behind this piece by Konix 100%, since it's brick-built. Well, some of it is built, I think a good portion of it falls under the category "arranged", but it's all a visual delight.
A Plastic Infinity takes a stab at what he calls techno-abstract and the results are compelling and fascinating. The use of all the trans clear with just enough mechanics underneath creates a very cool effect. This is only the beginning too, I can't wait to see where this goes.
Yet utterly compelling. This experiment in surrealism by Paul Vermeesch is called "Parenthesis". I could try to explain what it is or what it means, but even the artist doesn't know. Yet I'm drawn to it, and I bet you are too.
This photo is a bit over processed for my taste, but the build is awesome. This is the Demonic Key by mihaimariusmihu, and who knows what nightmares it opens. I love the use of the chains to add texture, and the Ninjago spinner as an eye is inspired.
Some builders just operate on a different level, Legohaulic is one of them. As if this gorgeous MOC wasn't impressive enough, the wings actually fold as you can see in the video below, Amazing.
CustomBRICKS is back again (it's only been a day!) with another remarkable brick-built caricature. There is just something so appealing about a minimalistic approach. The plan is mount this (and others) in shallow shadow boxes, and I think it's brilliant. I wouldn't mind one of these hanging on my wall.
Here at BrickNerd we look back from time to time. This MOC by Bram Lambrecht was at my first LEGO convention, BrickCon 2009, and it blew my mind. This, as well as a number of other incredible creations opened my eyes to the artistic and sculptural potential of my favorite bricks.
I could spout some nonsense about this "representing a woman's struggle to define herself in the midst of a generic world", but I truly hate when artists get all esoteric like that. How about "it's a silhouette, but instead of just black on white, it's represented by negative space. But the black is still there, as a reflection of sorts". I'd buy that (I'd blog it too).
I love Disneyland. In fact, I might even be there tomorrow. I only ride Space Mountain on special occasions though. It usually has a longer line than I'm willing to stand in, and it has a tendency to beat the crap out of me. I'm digging this MOC though, it captures it perfectly.
Siercon and Coral are back with another entry for Iron Builder. This artwork of a parrot in flight is absolutely stunning. And if that wasn't enough, the signature and all the brick-built art supplies will blow your mind. This Iron Builder is intense!
No, I'm not being cheeky with that title, that's how David Leest describes this MOC. There's a stark simplicity yet organic richness to this, very compelling. David says he'd like to build a bigger one some day. I'd say it would be right at home in MOMO. Nice work.
Chris McVeigh has been up to something interesting, something he calls "brick sketches". I'm inspired to make my own, but first I need some free time to build.
This is a fascinating piece, three dimensional modern interpretation of two dimensional Mondrian De Stijl art. It suffers a bit from somewhat dingy bricks and the lighting could be better, but it's still quite nice. I'd like to see this on an even bigger scale, I think it would be captivating. Imagine this standing about three feet tall and displayed at eye level. As you walked around it would be in continuous change, and surprise you with a clean grid four times. Nice work Veynom.
