Green Dragon

Deathly Halliwell is back with another stellar bust, this time it's a green dragon. This works very well as an overall sculpture, the pose and weight distribution is excellent. I also really like the expression, the lowered brow and slit eyes give it a really menacing look.

I Know Just How He Feels

I think we can all relate to this sometimes, it's particularly applicable to me these days. Between animation for Beyond The Brick, all things BrickNerd and recent work on Expendables 3, I feel like this all the time. But we carry on cmaddison, we carry on.

Sunflowers

One of my first experiences of build-on-command was cobbling together flowers for the window of the Clubhouse at LEGOLAND CA. Everyone's favorite Model Citizen Renate asked me to make a flower for her every time I visited, and they're still on display to this day. These excellent little sunflowers by Bruce Lowell would be right at home in that window. In fact, you better bring one with you next time Bruce.

Monument Valley

Your eyes, don't trust them. Iain Heath was so inspired by the graphics of the game Monument Valley that he decided to give them a go in bricks. And the results are visually captivating. There is a bit of photoshop trickery involved here, so don't rack your brain too much trying to figure it out. Click through for a behind the scenes pic.

May The Fourth Be With You

It is hard to convey the effect Star Wars had on me. The movie came out when I was nine, the perfect age to warp me for life. It is in my blood. As we celebrate one of my favorite unofficial holidays, I love all the Star Wars MOCs that show up in my Flickr feed. But this one by Legohaulic just blew me away. I have never seen any brick-built logo so perfect before, it's amazing. Not only that, but it's using a load of the seed part from his current battle in Iron Builder. WANT!

Catches Thieves, Just Like Flies.

I wasn't much into comics as a kid, but if I had a favorite it was probably Spiderman. His internal struggles always captivated me, and his snarkiness appealed to my shared somewhat disrespect for authority figures. This latest Brick Sketch by Chris McVeigh has to be one of the most complicated yet. That string work in phenomenal.

*Cough*

Time for another story. Way back when I used to work in creature effects, doing make-up and animatronics. And if you didn't know, it's a really toxic business. Combine that with the awesome air in Los Angeles in the late 80's/early 90's and my poor lungs wanted to leap out of my chest and retreat back to the central coast. I ended up really sick, like close to pulmonary shutdown, and a doctor said "you want to live to be 30? Change your industry and leave this town". This hauntingly beautiful MOC by Kosmas Santosa sorta reminds me of a few lovely spots in the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Update: I switched to digital visual effects, moved to Lompoc CA and got much better pretty quick.

The Cap

Wanted: Roommate to share apartment in NYC. Two bedroom with terrace overlooking Liberty Island. Would prefer male but willing to accept female applications. Must be patriotic, enjoy 40's music, cosplay and regular workouts. No commies.

Golden Ratio Calipers

I would not have thought this possible, or at least I would not have thought to attempt this. But Amida Na did and I'm so happy for it. If you do not know, the golden ratio is both a mathematical and aesthetic ratio of about 1.618 to 1. Look at your fingers, each digit is about 1.618 of the next. Artists have been using calipers like this for ages, and now LEGO builders can too.

Pontumon

This is the stuff of wondrous nightmares. But then again, that's sort of what mihaimariusmihu is best known for, beautiful yet haunting MOCs. The design on this is superb, effortlessly transitioning from shape to shape in a continuous flow. It's almost Gigeresque, and I would not be surprised to see this in a Guillermo del Toro movie.

The Wolverine

So what did you think when you first glanced at this? Artwork? Me too. But no, look closer, it's LEGO. It's not really a traditionally built MOC, more of clever part arrangement, but it's still friggin' awesome. 

No Parents

Everyone can relax, Powerpig is back in Brick Sketch mode. His latest offering is everyone's favorite orphan billionaire vigilante gadget-hound with anger management issues.

Visual Poetry

This is a feast for the eyes and the soul, T. S. Eliot's immortal words and McBricker's brilliant build. Combine both with beautiful composition and you have a trifecta. Just gorgeous.

Pixel America

This intriguing piece by Silva Vasil is inspired by the Pixelomic project by Dusan Cezek. I can't decide which is cooler, animated in 8-bit, or physical in bricks. It actually reminds me of the excellent game aesthetics of Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery.

Bonsai

This beautiful bonsai tree by Brickthing is perfectly suited to my level of green thumb, easily repaired and impossible to kill. I especially like the use of the Chima spider legs, and don't get so caught up in admiring the tree that you miss the base it's on, it's a small work of art too.

Beautiful Abandonment

Here at BrickNerd we like to look back from time to time, like that time some guy no one had heard of came out of his dark ages and BOOM, we get this. I believe my original response to this jaw-dropping MOC was "whhaaaaaaaaaa?". Mike Doyle has since established himself as a brick artist of the first calibre, and his book Beautiful LEGO has been a big hit. I'm honored to have been included in it.

LEGO Mystery Build

Tested should be familiar to all you fellow nerds out there. It's basically the online home of the Mythbusters and friends. Well, they have a little segment that's fairly new called the LEGO Mystery Build, where they put together a small custom kit. Carlmerriam's latest MOC is their logo, and it's spiffy.

Pimp2-D2

While wandering through Designer Con back in November, Guy Himber (V&A Steamworks) and I stumbled upon an artist named Jason Chalker. He had some great pieces on display and his Pimp2-D2 caught our eye. Now Guy has recreated this masterpiece at minifigure scale.

Spaaaaaaace

What better way to show your love for LEGO Classic Space than with a custom spacer leather jacket? Windell at Evil Mad Scientist did just that, and he shows us how he did it step by step. Click through for an excellent tutorial.

Insertion

This is a pretty cool little art piece, simple and clean. But if you look closely there's some clever building going on here. I'm actually not entirely certain how the hand connects to the tile that's being inserted, and I find that compelling.
